Epipage 2 was conducted in 21 of the 22 regions of metropolitan France and in 4 overseas regions. It started on 28 March 2011 in 7 French regions (Alsace, Burgundy, Guyana, Languedoc-Roussillon, Limousin, Midi-Pyrénées and Rhône-Alpes) and on 2 May 2011 in other regions (Aquitaine, Auvergne, Basse-Normandie, Bretagne, Centre, Champagne-Ardenne, Franche-Comté, Haute-Normandie, Ile-de-France, Lorraine, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, PACA-Corse, Pays-de-loire, Picardie, Martinique, La Réunion, Guadeloupe). 

All maternities and neonatal services in these regions participated in this study: 540 maternities and 280 neonatal services.
8,417 births (live, stillborn and medical termination of pregnancy) were recorded in maternity homes during this period. 93% of families agreed to participate in the study, corresponding to 7,804 births.
